More than 600 residents of Villeray/Saint-Michel/Park Extension who donated their time as volunteers in the past year were guests of the borough at a celebration and banquet held on April 22 at Le Madison in Saint-Michel to thank them for their volunteer efforts.
Many ways to volunteer
Each year, the borough throws a party for everyone who lent a helping hand during their spare hours, by either providing assistance to the borough’s cultural, sports and leisure services, doing sports refereeing, or driving the elderly around to doctors’ appointments.
On volunteer recognition night, the volunteers are thanked with a banquet that’s often accompanied by an entertaining show. This year’s show was given by a group of young swing dance performers specializing in 1920s, 30s and 40s dance numbers.
The value of volunteerism
“We’ve always shown our appreciation for all the men, women and children who give their time and dedication the well-being of our citizens,” Deros said in an interview with Nouvelles Parc Extension News. “If you were to put a dollar value on the time that they contribute it would be in the millions. This is our way of saying thank you for your dedication and giving back to the community. We appreciate you.”
John Marshall, 70, who has spent most of his life in Park Extension and volunteered with numerous local organizations, was presented with the borough’s 2016 Volunteer of the Year award for Park Extension. Another Park Exer, Hasher Ahmed, was presented with an award as the Youth Volunteer of the Year from Park Extension, although he could not be on hand to personally receive the award trophy.
