This week in COVID-19: what you need to know

COVID-19 refers to the disease caused by a new kind of coronavirus. Coronavirus is a family of viruses that can affect animals and humans. The family of viruses causes respiratory illnesses.

The new kind of coronavirus was first found in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Since then, the virus has spread to over 200 countries.

The global numbers

As of today, there are 8,525,042 confirmed cases reported to the World Health Organization (WHO).

So far, 456,973 people have died across the world due to COVID-19.

The latest in Quebec

As of today, the province has 54,674 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The number of new daily COVID-19 cases in Quebec have reduced in the last week. Today, the province confirmed 124 new cases.

The province confirmed also 33 new deaths today, bringing Quebec’s death toll to 5,408 since the crisis started.

Currently, 529 people are hospitalized in Quebec due to COVID-19, a decrease of 259 since last Saturday.

Finally, the number of patients in intensive care stands at 62.

Cases in the neighbourhood

This past week, public health confirmed 324 new cases in Montreal, for a total of 26,937 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension ranks sixth highest among Montreal’s thirty three boroughs for the highest number of COVID-19 cases.

Currently, the borough has 2,115 confirmed cases.

As for deaths, the borough has had 1 new death related to COVID-19 in the last week.

So far, 130 borough residents have died because of COVID-19.
