Mary Deros to Seek New Term Representing Parc‑Extension in 2025 Municipal Election

After careful consideration, longtime city councillor Mary Deros announced she will stand for re-election in the Parc‑Extension district during the upcoming Montreal municipal elections on November 2, 2025.

Deros shared the decision on her official social media page, noting she was encouraged by local residents to continue serving their interests and advancing community-focused priorities. The councillor emphasized her desire to build on progress in collaboration with her municipal party, Ensemble Montréal, now led by Soraya Martinez Ferrada.

Working within a renewed Ensemble Montréal

Soraya Martinez Ferrada – former federal Tourism Minister and current leader of Ensemble Montréal – was elected party leader by acclamation on February 28, 2025, making her the official mayoral candidate for the November contest. Deros commended Martinez Ferrada’s proactive and responsive leadership style, based on their previous collaborations, and cited the renewed energy within the party as a motivating factor in her decision.

Soraya Martinez Ferrada left her federal posts in early February 2025 to pursue the municipal leadership role. The municipal election will take place as scheduled on November 2, 2025.

Community commitments

Deros and Ensemble Montréal outlined several key campaign pledges for the Villeray–Saint‑Michel–Parc‑Extension borough:

  • Reconversion of abandoned city-owned buildings into non-market housing, including plans for the former Chinese hospital site.
  • A cleanliness and rat-control plan adapted specifically to local conditions in the borough.
  • Enhanced urban planning and public spaces, prioritizing quality and safety over quantity, with beautification efforts.
  • A formal partnership with community groups, targeting issues such as homelessness and social integration.

These initiatives reflect a focus on infrastructure, services, and social cohesion at the neighbourhood level.

Political landscape ahead of November

The 2025 municipal election will be held over the full island of Montreal on November 2, with all seats on the 103-member city council and 19 borough councils up for grabs. Ensemble Montréal, led now by Martinez Ferrada, is positioning itself as a pragmatic and community-centered alternative to projects like Projet Montréal.

Looking ahead

By officially launching her re-election campaign, Mary Deros is aiming to extend her more than 25 years of municipal leadership in Parc‑Extension. She is aligning her platform with party-wide commitments under Martinez Ferrada’s leadership. Key issues set to define the race in Parc‑Extension include affordable housing, public health and cleanliness, urban renewal, and communal collaboration.
