A violent overnight crash near the busy Saint-Laurent and Crémazie corridor left three people hospitalized early Sunday morning on the 12th of April and led to the arrest of a suspected impaired driver, according to Montreal police.
Emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 3:30 a.m. after multiple calls to 911 reported a vehicle that had slammed into roadside structures along Saint-Laurent Boulevard near Crémazie Boulevard, an area frequently used by motorists travelling between Parc-Extension and the neighbouring Villeray sector.
Police say the vehicle was heading north when it veered off its path, striking a tree before hitting a pole and finally coming to rest against a concrete barrier. The impact caused significant damage and prompted a rapid emergency response that closed part of the area while investigators assessed the scene.
Two passengers, women aged 25 and 26, were found inside the vehicle when officers arrived. Both were transported to hospital for treatment. One of the women was initially reported to be in critical condition, but her condition later stabilized, authorities confirmed.
Police noted that the driver was not present at the crash site when first responders arrived. Officers later located a 27-year-old man nearby and placed him under arrest on suspicion of impaired driving. He was also taken to hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening. Investigators say the suspect will be required to provide blood samples as part of the ongoing investigation.
Witnesses were interviewed in the hours following the crash, and surveillance footage from nearby buildings may be reviewed as investigators attempt to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision.
A High-Traffic Corridor Near a Dense Residential Area
Although the crash occurred just south of Parc-Extension’s residential core, the Saint-Laurent and Crémazie intersection is widely recognized as a major traffic artery serving several densely populated neighbourhoods. Parc-Extension itself is among the most densely populated districts on the Island of Montreal, with heavy traffic flow connecting commuters to surrounding boroughs and highways.
Such conditions can increase the risks associated with impaired or reckless driving, particularly during overnight hours when traffic is lighter and speeds can increase.
Impaired Driving Remains a Persistent Concern
Under Quebec law, impaired driving carries significant legal consequences. A first offence typically includes a minimum fine of $1,000, in addition to mandatory evaluation programs and the possible installation of an ignition interlock device on the offender’s vehicle.
Authorities continue to stress the importance of responsible driving, especially in urban areas where collisions can quickly lead to serious injuries or worse.

Police say the investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Officers continue to gather statements and review evidence to determine whether additional charges may be laid.
