Parc-Extension residents do not have to wait until October 5 to vote in Quebec’s provincial election, with advance polling beginning this weekend and several other voting options available.
Election day polls will be open on Monday, October 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Advance voting will take place on Sunday, September 27, and Monday, September 28, during the same hours.
Élections Québec is also offering five voting days at returning offices. Voting may additionally be available on university and college campuses, in certain private seniors’ residences and long-term care facilities, and at home for electors who cannot travel because of health problems. Eligibility and schedules vary for these special arrangements.
Residents who will be elsewhere in Quebec during the election period may be able to vote at the returning office in the area they are visiting while still casting a ballot for a candidate in their home riding.
Before going to vote, electors should verify that their name appears on the voters list and that their registered address is correct. This can be checked through the Élections Québec website or on the notice of registration delivered by mail.
This step is particularly important for anyone who has recently moved. Quebec does not permit electors to register or change their address at the polling station on election day. Errors must be corrected before the final revision deadline.
Voters must present an accepted piece of identification. Options include a Quebec health insurance card, Quebec driver’s licence, Canadian passport, Certificate of Indian Status or Canadian Armed Forces identification card.
The notice of registration sent at the beginning of the campaign contains the address and schedule for advance voting. A yellow reminder card, mailed closer to election day, identifies the regular polling location and lists the candidates in the elector’s riding.
The reminder card is helpful but is not mandatory. Electors may vote without it as long as they are properly registered and can establish their identity.
Polling locations are assigned according to residential address, so Parc-Extension voters should not assume that their usual community centre, school or other nearby public building will necessarily be their voting location.
Élections Québec’s online address-search tool provides the correct polling place and information about its physical accessibility. Anyone whose assigned location does not meet their accessibility needs can contact the returning officer to discuss possible arrangements.
With advance voting arriving this weekend, checking registration and polling information now can prevent an unpleasant surprise on election day.
