The Heart of Parc-Ex: Hieu Phan and Ranvir Singh Shine at Volunteer Awards

Parc-Extension Celebrates Outstanding Volunteers with Borough-Wide Recognition Awards

Two exceptional individuals from Parc-Extension have been honoured by the Borough of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension as part of its 2025 Volunteer Recognition Awards, which celebrate citizens who make a significant difference in their communities through selfless service. Hieu Phan and Ranvir Singh stood out among this year’s recipients for their dedication to youth empowerment and community well-being.

A Veteran Role Model: Hieu Phan

Representing the district of Parc-Extension in the category of Volunteer of the Year, Hieu Phan has been a cornerstone of the Centre communautaire Jeunesse Unie de Parc-Extension for the past 12 years. Known for his warm sense of humour and patient presence, Mr. Phan has earned the admiration of countless local youth. Whether supporting students with homework, organizing fundraisers, or encouraging young people to pursue their dreams, he brings compassion and energy to every task.

Mr. Phan also shares his love for photography with the youth, using it as a tool for self-expression and creativity. His long-standing commitment has made him a role model within Parc-Extension — a vibrant, diverse neighbourhood where volunteers like him play a crucial role in creating a safe and inspiring environment for the next generation.

A Young Changemaker: Ranvir Singh

The Youth Volunteer of the Year (13–17 years) award went to Ranvir Singh, a dynamic young volunteer with Himalaya Séniors du Québec. Deeply familiar with the Parc-Extension area and its multicultural communities, Ranvir brings a fresh and passionate voice to local volunteer efforts. His work has made a notable impact, especially among seniors and fellow volunteers, who are moved by his commitment and drive to help others.

In a neighbourhood where intergenerational and cross-cultural engagement is vital, Ranvir stands out as a unifying presence. His efforts are not only appreciated by residents but also serve to inspire other young people to step forward and give back.

Honouring Dedication Through Art

As part of the recognition, all five borough award winners—including those from Villeray, François-Perrault, and Saint-Michel—received a unique glass sculpture created by local glassblower Bruno Andrus. The symbolic artwork features two intertwining sections of glass representing joined hands and mutual support. Its yellow flame and red accents evoke warmth, passion, and love — qualities embodied by the honourees.

This initiative, launched in 2013, celebrates one adult volunteer from each district and one rising youth volunteer each year. The selection is made by borough councillors, who highlight the importance of grassroots leadership and everyday heroism within Montreal’s urban communities.

The Heart of Parc-Extension

Often described as one of Montreal’s most dynamic yet underrepresented neighbourhoods, Parc-Extension thrives thanks to its people — residents who show up, step up, and lead with heart. The stories of Hieu Phan and Ranvir Singh serve as powerful reminders that volunteering is not just an act of kindness but a force for community resilience and transformation.

Their contributions remind us that local heroes come in many forms: a seasoned mentor with a camera and a calm word, and a teenager with a vision for a better, more caring world.
